Rodent Inspection for Indianapolis Homes

A brick Victorian house with a turret and gingerbread trim on a tree-lined street in Irvington, Indianapolis
Old houses have a lot of corners to check. A good inspection takes its time.

Sometimes you know what you've got. Other times you've got a noise in the wall, a few droppings by the furnace and no idea whether it's a mouse, a rat or a chipmunk that wandered in. An inspection answers that, and more to the point, it tells you how they're getting in.

Ask the company whether the inspection is billed on its own or folded into the job. It varies from company to company, and we don't set it.

What Gets Checked

A good inspection is slow. Expect the tech to look at:

  • The foundation all the way around, at ground level
  • The basement or crawl space: sill plate, pipe holes, floor drain, sump area
  • The attic, for droppings and nesting in the insulation
  • Garage door seals, stored seed, and any droppings on shelves
  • Outside: burrows, wood stacks, the compost bin, feeders, vole runways

What You Should Walk Away With

You should know which rodent it is, about how much activity there is, and where the entry points are. A tech who can't show you a single gap should keep looking. From there the plan is usually some mix of trapping mice, sealing and cleanup.

Buying an older house in Irvington or Broad Ripple? A rodent inspection before closing is a cheap way to find out what's living in the basement.

Rodent Q&A

Do I have to be home?

Plan on it for the first visit. The tech has to get into the basement, the garage and the attic.

Will they find the problem in one visit?

Usually they find most of it. Sometimes a second look after traps have been out for a week fills in the rest.
